About project:

For the installation, seven costumes designed from the original picture book “Nepue”and three photographs of children wearing the costumes were hung. In the center of the installation, a large guitar shaped object was placed, where children could draw on or climb onto. The object was also inspired by the story of “Nepue” and is wrapped by felt, for the safety of children. Also shown was a 2 x 1.5 m big book shaped object, also made of felt, which contains drawings made of textiles and embroidery, and many transparent pockets. You can turn pages like a usual book. The audience can put their messages and drawings in those transparent pockets and take messages or drawings left by others. Later on, the documentation of the performance and the workshops were shown on video.

Workshop, Sound of Nepue:

A workshop entitled “Sound of Nepue” began with the slide show of a picture book “Nepue”while Chiko and Toko read out the story. They encouraged participating children to imagine freely what the sound of Nepue, a singing cosmic plant from the story, could be. After a basic lecture by a specialist of the wooden manual musical box and a composer who were invited to teach how to use the box and how to compose a tune, the children started to punch holes on a board to compose their own tunes and later drew on it together with the name of the tune and their own names. As the workshop was open to public, visitors to the exhibition could also join the workshop together with the children. At the end of it, all the participants presented their own “Sound of Nepue”.

Later on Chiko & Toko made mini character dolls of the eight participants, the specialist of musical box and the composer, which they installed, a few weeks after the workshop, next tothe Chiko & Toko character dolls that were already on exhibit. They also installed three wooden manual musical boxes and punched boards, (the children’s creations), under each child’s character doll, which visitors could place themselves in the musical box to listen to the music children have composed.

プロジェクトについて：

新作パフォーマンスとワークショップ、インスタレーションを制作しました。

展覧会スペースでは、『チコ・トコ・プロジェクト』のオリジナル絵本『ネピュー』

からデザインされた7つのユニークなコスチュームが吊り下がっており、

それらのコスチュームを着た子どものモデルの写真が3枚展示されていました。

インスタレーション中央の床には直径4ｍもの大きなギター型のオブジェが展示され、

子ども達はテーブルとしてお絵描きに使用したり、よじ登って遊ぶことができました。

このギター型のオブジェも『ネピュー』のお話から制作されたもので、子どもたちが

ぶつかっても安全なようにフェルトの布でくるまれています。

もうひとつの大きなオブジェは、直径2m、幅1,5mの同じくフェルト製の本型の

オブジェで、この中にはフェルトや布、刺繍で描かれたドローイングや、たくさんの

透明ポケットが仕組まれており、本のように1枚ずつページをめくることができます。

展覧会スペースに訪れた人々は、この透明ポケットに彼ら自身のメッセージや

ドローイングを展示し、代わりに別の人のメッセージやドローイングを透明ポケットの

中から、自由に持ち帰ることができました。パフォーマンスやワークショップの様子も

展覧会場にビデオ展示しました。

『ネピュー』の音楽について：

最初に『ネピュー』のお話をスライドで見せながら、チコとトコがお話を朗読しました。

ワークショップに参加した子ども達に、お話を楽しみながら、絵本に登場する歌を歌う

宇宙植物、『ネピュー』の音楽を自由に想像してもらいました。

それから木製の手回しオルゴールの専門家と作曲家を招いて、使用方法や作曲の仕方

などの基礎的な説明を受けたのち、用意された厚紙にパンチを使って穴を開けて自由に

音楽を作曲し、さらにその上にドローイングと曲名、そして各自の名前を描きました。

このワークショップは、一般公開されていたので、展覧会に訪れた人々も、

自由に子どもたちと一緒にワークショップに参加することができました。

ワークショップの最後には、参加者全員が各自作曲した『ネピュー』の音楽を

それぞれ発表をしました。

ワークショップの後、参加者の8人の子ども達と、木製の手回しオルゴールの専門家と

作曲家のミニサイズの3Dキャラクター人形を制作しました。

これらの人形はこのワークショップが終了した2、3週間後に、3台の木製の手回し

オルゴールと共に展覧会スペースに設置されました。

またこれらのキャラクター人形の下には、子どもたちがワークショップで各自作曲した、

穴の開いた厚紙（オルゴール紙）もあわせて展示されており、訪れた人々は展示されている

オルゴール紙を手に取り、オルゴールを自身の手で回して、チコ・トコや子どもたちの

作曲した『ネピュー』の音楽を聞くことができました。
